Absolutely.
Linear models have had a stranglehold on most areas of science for far too long. If all that deep learning does is break that stranglehold, that more than justifies its existence.

With the current state of deep learning, I don't think it would be able to come up with the sort of meta-level thinking, the intuitive leaps that are needed to move science forward. But it could definitely aid in the process. What should be aimed at at present is

human-AI collaboration, until we undergo paradigm shifts on how to approach incorporating true causal and logical understanding into AI. We might need to hack consciousness for that, but there might be other ways.
