Imagine an alternate history in which there was no atomic bomb and the US had to invade Japan. It would have been much, much worse.

If you read about what the invasion of Okinawa was like and then extrapolate that to mainland Japan. The human costs would have been much much higher without the bomb. Also.. The firebombings of Tokyo had higher casualties that Hiroshima/Nagasaki.

It possibly have prevented something much worse*. But it is not what happened that matters, it is what you do that matters. You wouldn't kill one innocent person to save a hundred I believe. Numbers are statistically crucial but sentimentally worthless.

*it is also important to note what "worse" means in this context. Now that many countries have nukes because they saw how things play out. Is it really not that worse ?
