This is essentially the woke tactic - mask the bitter truth with comforting lies by forcing a vocabulary change on everyone. After all, language is how we think isn’t it? Change the language => control what people think. It’s sinister and must be rejected absolutely.

McCarthy must be rolling in his grave. Looks like they are talking about perils of using "Inherited models" that may inherit some properties of "Base models." Read "Foundation model = somewhat widely used and heavily marketed Base models of 2021 which no one will use in 2026."
-
The models we are using are not the result of a serious attempt to build models that can be used effectively as the foundation of other reasoning systems, they're things used to prove a point or win a prize.

I've never got the "solid foundations" thing though - human reasoning isn't built on solid foundations, sofas aren't sofas - they're things we have decided to call sofas. Why should AI be able to bridge the abstractions in the world any more reliably than we can?
-
Yes the human notions aren't built on solid concepts. But he is not talking about that. He is just opposing algorithms for which you know the answer will be always correct (i.e., the best in an optimization problem), from heuristics that necessary suffer some limitations.
