Almost 1000 people applied for 5 jobs. Whittling down a pool like that always has steps that seem arbitrary. Those unqualified already eliminated. Over 200 left after diversity selection, who then went through detailed screening. All seems reasonable to me.
Whittling down a faculty applicant pool "always has steps that seem arbitrary"? That's your best justification for hiring only DEI activists? You must be kidding.

It makes sense for the whittling step to serve the overall needs of the school. This makes much more sense than, say, score on some standardized test. It’s not their problem some prefer the historical preferential treatment of straight white men.
