Then ads based model has to be replaced. With users unlikely to pay for services what's the incentive?

That's a great question and I feel it's time to dedicate more effort to answer. How do we move incentives towards what we actually need as a global society of talking monkeys? Hoping that profit accumulation would correlate perfectly with our development may not be so effective

It's like saying I want evolution to maximize beauty instead of survival and reproduction. Social media will maximize for usefulness if useful content happens to be the most engaging.

I've particularly noticed this with YouTube: years ago, recommendations were based on subscriptions (how I wished I behaved); now, they are click-based (how I actually behave). While I'm watching more YT than before, I feel bad about it - equivalent of eating "comfort" food

Which is why ultimately the decision on what to maximize should be made by you, not YouTube.

AFAIK, social networks work on the hypothesis "you engage iff it's interesting; it's interesting iff it's useful". Ergo social media cos. might think "maximize by usefulness" = "maximize by engagement". Not sure if there are any tests to validate / debunk said hypothesis.
