If the error rate comes below natural error rate of human judgement, it might work.
Machine learning is best for applications where errors have low cost - the opposite of self-driving cars.

Machine learning is helping doctors right now in Japan diagnose and fight cancer by enabling outcomes 10x faster. Maybe… Low cost machine learning is ‘best’ for low error cost. Whatever best means.

I guess it depends on what options there are. If there’s a quick route to self-driving vehicles that isn’t ML-based, then I’d agree. But I see no reason to prefer a higher human accident rate over a lower (but non-zero) ML one.

That would be true if self driving features were not saving lives every day. As they prevent accidents and do save lives I’m sorry to say it’s a darkly irresponsible statement

You under estimate the stupidity, temperament and technique of human drivers. AI can learn from the best drivers and become better than everyone. It would never be accident free but that's not true for human drivers either.

In the near future there will be dedicated roads for driver less vehicles, likely startling from China.
