If affirmative action does not lower standards, why is it needed?

No they don’t. They look for the best worker / colleague. I bet in many situations they even favor women or hard-working minorities. Eg CEOs lobby for h1bs.
In fact, women applying for science faculty positions in the US are twice as likely to get hired as men. Not hard to guess which way the bias runs.

female colleagues are lowering standards? Funnily enough, women who've written about leaving (or avoiding) CS, often point to men with that very attitude. They prefer finance or some other field where the men are more secure.
