If affirmative action does not lower standards, why is it needed?

Indeed, but I think his point is another. If doesn't lower "standards" (whatever it means), then would be a matter of breaking ties in a diverse manner. I think that "affirmative action" here is used as meaning much more than breaking ties, hence may lower standards.

What if a company or institution finds intrinsic value in diversity and increased representation? Then "standards" and "merit" -- whatever these mean -- may not be the only factors to take into account

Sure, yet I think the point is another. A change of evaluation function can be debated and worth! A point that I agree with
