If you consider dimensions as "degrees of freedom", this does not seem surprising at all. Trying to conceptualize higher dimensions as geometry seems to be the problem.

On the other hand, the volume of n-cube goes to infinity as n→∞. I think the reason for n-ball volume is zero in the limit n→∞ is because the n-ball leaves out relatively more and more lattice points that otherwise would be included in the n-cube volume for a given r.
