Four ways to acquire commonsense knowledge for AI: 1. Derive it from axioms (McCarthy, failed) 2. Enter it by hand (Lenat, failed) 3. Mine it from the Web (Mitchell, limited success) 4. Video prediction and interaction (I’ll bet on this one)

Overly cynical to call (2) a failure. After several decades of development Cyc is probably as good as humans have ever achieved for common sense. With that baseline anything else has a lot of catching up to do first.

Methods 1-3 rely on the same paradigm: manipulating existing abstractions while ignoring how they relate to original inputs. 4) just points to including original inputs and causality; it says nothing about the underlying technology/paradigm, in that sense 4 is a vacuous statement
