This should happen but I doubt it will. Europeans have come to occupy a comfortable niche. They'll let the US bear the cost of innovation (and global defence) and then skim the benefits. In the meantime, they play with toys such as climate change.
Europeans need to be shaken out of their complacency. While they're preoccupied with second-order issues like climate change, America and China are racing ahead in innovation.
