The other dirty little secret is - most of these scientists you talk about, they view statistics as a tool to be arm-twisted into supporting their chosen narrative. They don’t view it as a tool to reveal the truth.
The dirty little secret of a lot of scientists is that all the statistics they ever learned was Stats 101, which they hated anyway, but now they're dealing with very complex models and massive messy data and they're completely at sea.

I think this apply to most of ML. If ML researchers had read a bit more about statistics (or Fourier analysis, or control theory), they would not reinvent the wheel all the time
