Why not have a @Kaggle competition to predict global temperature? Then we'll see how good those climate models really are.

There is much more to setting up a successful ML competition than just having access to the right data. For instance, all the data for the NCAA competitions are also freely available. But outside of Kaggle competitions, we don’t publicly get nearly as good models.

If you have access to data, it would be easy to setup an "In Class" Kaggle competition to try it out. Due to the unique nature of this problem, I think that trying a few different formats, and iterating often with consecutive short competitions, could lead to the winning setup.
