Why not have a @Kaggle competition to predict global temperature? Then we'll see how good those climate models really are.

Isn't much of this data public?
*All* of this data is public (in theory, at least - paid for with your tax dollars).

There is much more to setting up a successful ML competition than just having access to the right data. For instance, all the data for the NCAA competitions are also freely available. But outside of Kaggle competitions, we don’t publicly get nearly as good models.
