ML thrives on summer internships. Some legendary ones: Mehran Sahami, Microsoft, 1997: first ML-based spam filter John Duchi, Google, 2009: first adaptive stochastic gradient algorithm Navdeep Jaitly, Google, 2011: first deep learning-based speech recognizer Who will be next?

The point I am trying to make is not that I get all the awesome interns, but that there are hundreds of interns doing incredible work every year all over the planet. Kudos to all the great interns, their enthusiasm, creativity and hard work!

As the opportunities expand for interns, work study, practicums etc., this will take off this decades. The idea of supporting new minds and interdisciplinary transitions into fields is growing.
