I get the impression the real danger isn’t human-level AI so much as sub-human level algorithms being wielded carelessly at a scale we can‘t really comprehend, affecting our lives and society in ways even its creators don’t fully understand. More Fantasia than Frankenstein.

Agreed! However, I like to think of the AI we should worry about as a distributed hive-like being evolving from several narrow AI systems working in tandem like a bee colony. They may not be superior to humans individually, but become exponentially more capable when connected.
