I’m flabbergasted at the AI researchers who are OK with AI being seen as an evil technology. If AI is so harmful, why are they doing it?

Why did people do nuclear arms research? (Better we than they was one of the more sympathetic answers)

Also, (this is particularly true for AI Safety camp, not sure if you have others in mind) AI is not good or evil, but AI is the most powerful technology, and but poorly controlled AI could produce very bad outcomes for humanity.

AI was to me always both incredibly fascinating, and at the same time scary. I believe those who do the research are especially aware of this. Maybe that is what drives them? To be able to "counter" the governments laying their hands on this tech, which they are. Know your enemy.
