Have you actually read the excerpts from the book? This is not a matter of him having said one thing one time. This person deeply held worldview is entirely incompatible with the company’s stated philosophy. Like accidentally hiring an elephant poacher to Greenpeace
Why did they hire him, then? Or did they just cave in when the mob pressured them to fire him?

You assume they reacted to pressure, rather than to new information about their guy. I think they simply didn’t know what was in the book when they hired him. I don’t know how senior / high profile he was, but I can imagine HR doesn’t go full CIA on every single candidate
