The easiest way to do high-impact research is to continuously talk to different people in industry and notice problems that they don't know they have in common.

To be fair, I think that we all do this continuously. For example, I never spoke to actual researchers in the Met Office. You did that and thenb aggregated that feedback. Communities assimilate information more than people do.
