Contrary to popular belief, the great majority of AI research is still done in academia. But research at the big tech companies gets far more publicity, including de facto credit for joint research with universities.

that's why Google DeepMind opened an office here in Edmonton, so they could work with the University of Alberta. University's aren't exactly setup to commercialise research without an industry partner. So it's kind of a win-win (all of which I'm sure you know)
