A good rule of thumb for writing a mathematical paper is that it should be possible to understand it while ignoring all the equations.

Pedro, that sentence is meaningless if you don't specify by whom it should be possible to understand. A mathematician working on the same topic? A mathematician from another area of math? You or me? A lay person whith little knowledge of math?

Someone in the same general field or an adjacent one. It's obviously not feasible for lay people.

Fully agree. A lay person broadly interested in the topic should be able to understand key concepts and main points.

Don't agree. It's just not practical. Papers must assume a certain level of expertise to avoid being 100 pages long, and sometimes that level is quite advanced.
