Google having an AI ethics group is like ExxonMobil having an environmental ethics group: guaranteed to not end well.

Anyone hired for that job has to know that their job is to portray their employer as ethical, not to actually steer the direction of the company to make it more ethical (especially if it costs the company money). Anyone who tries will make countless enemies and be fired quickly.

I think the trick is to steer people towards LGBT and race issues (which don't hurt the company's bottomline) and away from energy waste, monopolistic practices, censorship, and privacy issues (which do).

The Google AI ethics group is an attempt at good PR which has backfired for them. Moreso it appears they did not quite brief their recruits into that group as to what exactly their brief was. Now they have a misunderstanding with those employees as to what they shoud be doing.

It is quite confusing to talk about AI ethics when this AI have no conscience... it is like talking about the ethics of a rock.. it depends on the who and the where: who throws, where it lands. Just because the who is blurred, it can’t be called ethical IMHO...
