Evil or not, it is harmful for society.
There's nothing wrong with disparate impact per se. It's merely a reason to investigate further in case it's caused by discrimination. But the AI ethics crowd considers it something intrinsically evil that must be fixed by tampering with the algorithms. There's no basis for this.

Any correlation is causation as long as it generates clickbait headlines, but the fact that prisons are filled with 90% males and that males receive 40% harsher sentences doesn't count for **** somehow.

Given the assumption that corporatism is ethical, disparate impact calls for investigation. Given the assumption that corporations create a chilling environment for free speech, any excuse should be used to oppose them. Under either assumption cancel culture is good.
