Maximizing engagement is what every successful novel, film, TV show, song, sport and video game does. Why should social media be any different?
Of course not. I'm just pointing out that social media is no different from other media in trying to maximize engagement.

Their pursuit of maximum engagement may be similar but their methods are not, which is a crucial difference. The morality of convincing people to take certain actions depends on the means by which they are convinced. At some point it becomes emotional manipulation, no?

The mechanisms of maximizing engagement on social media are far more effective than those used by book authors/publishers. That difference in power isn't beside the point, there's an important tipping point somewhere in there.
