Yesterday, I ended up in a debate where the position was "algorithmic bias is a data problem". I thought this had already been well refuted within our research community but clearly not. So, to say it yet again -- it is not just the data. The model matters. 1/n

Bias doesn't need to be intentional. Most human cognitive Biases are built into the structure and function of the brain. They are tacit and many are unintentional but are still Biases. That is standard parlance. Same for neural network Biases.

As a general matter, improve the competence is definitely a way to fight against bias though. And in this specific case, human incompetence leads to biased algorithms.
