The controversy around ethical AI becomes a lot easier to understand once you realize that "ethical" really means "political" in this context: thus Google's ethical AI group is really its political AI group, NeurIPS's ethical review process is its political review process, etc.

How to speed up algorithms is a non-political question. Whether algorithms should have race- and gender-proportional outcomes is a political one.
