People do not examine the scientific method and the techniques being used to ascertain the epistemic truth to the objective reality they're looking at. Unbeknown to many, this reality often escapes perception and some form of measurability.

@pmddomingos can I inquire your views on the origin of humanity? Are you Creationist or do you place a high prob. weight on some form of Neo-Darwinism? -- I think folks are skeptical of science, in many cases, because it conflicts w/ their belief systems. -
@bengoertzel I can see both your point (people denying evolution), and Domingos’ (people denying biology). It behooves people to believe whatever it behooves them to believe, be the motive political, religious, whatever. It has, somewhat obviously, always been so.

This is a bad take. Non scientists are skeptical of science because scientists insist on writing their papers using obtuse and overly technical language no one else can understand. Also, media reporting on scientific discoveries is routinely flat out wrong.

Was this true in the time of Galileo? Or the Scopes trial? Or only today? I think motivated reasoning is a better explanation, both then and now, but I agree that needlessly politicizing science doesn’t help matters.

We know how the church felt about Galileo, but is that also how the masses felt? I think the main parallel between then and now is how the dominant ideology of the day is gaining and keeping power, and how dissenters are treated.
