I see this argument all the time from tech people: Building gargantuan AI models may be computationally, environmentally, and financially costly. But if those models then go on to solve cancer, isn't that on balance better for the world? NOOOO. A thread.

Everyone is entitled to a rant, whether it's correct or not. Always an opportunity to consider another side of something I otherwise wouldn't think about.
you begin with picking one issue you have with the thread, then when you finish w_ that one you move to the next one..its easy unless you really have nothing to say, then blanket statements of "all this bad" will do

I read it as just another sociological argument wrapped in AI. There are luddite/anti-AI claims being made all the time because those speaking out seem to represent anthropology/humanities that would otherwise get no funding for their soapbox. AI bashing; and make AI pay for it.
