I see this argument all the time from tech people: Building gargantuan AI models may be computationally, environmentally, and financially costly. But if those models then go on to solve cancer, isn't that on balance better for the world? NOOOO. A thread.

I read it as just another sociological argument wrapped in AI. There are luddite/anti-AI claims being made all the time because those speaking out seem to represent anthropology/humanities that would otherwise get no funding for their soapbox. AI bashing; and make AI pay for it.
