Yes, I know Sendhil's work. Let's see what Pedro might say? To me, having a conversation about this topic, and about the ideas and evidence related to it, is the whole point. This act of conversing is what is worth protecting. At least that is my view. :-)
There is by now a whole thread of research on this issue, and it's far from clear that parole algorithms unfairly penalize blacks. Much more to say here, but Twitter is obviously not the best venue for a substantial discussion :)

I disagree with your view that “algorithms can’t be racist.” Imagine a decision tree that branches on a single variable (race) and decides to take positive or negative action towards the person solely on that basis. Would that not be a racist algorithm?
