I think policing technical papers is dumb. But I also get the fear that the switch to more machines in control could conceivably make the inequities in the world a permanent state of affairs. The initial seed will likely matter. But something for Congress, not neurips.

So.., I just make the tools and the tools are not evil/good themselves, but how you use them defines the ethics? Is that your argument? Very head-in-sand thinking that is all so common in academia.

This POV is in fact a reasonable one. It is very different from the one that says we are not at all responsible for the tools we create. And it is also distinct from saying we are solely responsible for their outputs. There are more choices than just binary.

Dear
@pmddomingos, I think you would be more successful if you didn't make it a righ/left thing. I am left leaning and I agree with your views. Your views are similar to those of the Free Software Movement, which includes people from all parties (mostly left). - Näytä vastaukset

IMHO
@pmddomingos it is precisely this distinction that trips everyone. I.e it isn’t that ethical concerns aren’t valid, but that in the spectrum of fundamental research, applied research to user applications, the extent to which these apply vary. Blanket statements help no one.Kiitos. Käytämme tätä aikajanasi parantamiseen. KumoaKumoa
