One of the saddest things I've learned recently: students deciding against getting a PhD because they can't take the political correctness of academia any more.

Now imagine students deciding against getting a PhD because of being harrassed (sexual, unwelcoming, other). Hopefully you find this example sadder.

I've received many emails reflecting that exact sentiment. Some are undergraduates I knew personally who are brilliant and would make excellent scientists. Yet they're hesitant to pursue the long and hard path to a PhD because they know any misstep could cost them everything.
