Anima, the NIPS name change was a terrible idea, and the community properly rejected it. What's sad is that in the end you still managed to get the acronym changed to the current clunky, confusion-promoting one.

I don't think you are being fair in characterising it as "bullying": people correctly pointed out that the old acronym was a slang term for nipple,in the USA. It fostered stereotypes of an old boys club that did not care if women felt uncomfortable. We are well rid of it.

Yes. This statement is true of the anti-Japanese slur sense of the old acronym, too, though the affected group is smaller.

That's the point. If you only care about what the majority wants then you get discriminations and under representation of other groups.

Also there is the self-selection problem that endemic to all of technology and especially computer science. (And the unsubstantiated claim to speak for a majority in the first place)
