Anima, the NIPS name change was a terrible idea, and the community properly rejected it. What's sad is that in the end you still managed to get the acronym changed to the current clunky, confusion-promoting one.

searching for neurips online leads consistently to things related to the conference, whereas its previous name led to all sorts of things. I don't see how neurips is "clunky" and "confusion-promoting"
It's harder to pronounce, write and remember (just ask non-native English speakers), and it means the same conference is referred to by different acronyms in different years.

I would rather pronounce something hypothetically unpronounceable (its not actually!) than use a misleading and shameful term. Some people just cannot let go of their pride & ego. They just keep digging the hole they are already in, even deeper, trying to justify their stupidity.

As far as different-acronym is concerned: the conference name is still the same, isn't it? Still if someone doesn't know about the name change, a quick look at, say, a specific paper would show the same conference name printed at the bottom. Not that hard to figure out? (2/2)

And CVPR, ICML, ICCV, AAAI, SIGKDD, IJCAI, IJCNN, and ECMLPKDD all just roll off the tongue!

Notice that all of those are proper acronyms, unlike NeurIPS, with four letters from the first word.
