This @pmddomingos thing gets me down a bit. I disagree with him, and the way he's conducting the argument, but I also suspect that there's a substantial proportion of the community that does agree with him, and is keeping quiet for fear of a pile-on.
More than that: the majority of the community agrees with me, but is afraid of having their papers rejected.
As a NeurIPS reviewer, I would say it is fairer to say that the majority of the community was confused about what should go into that section. At least, they were, last spring. OTOH, that does not mean they disagree with its goals or idea.
