It's alarming that NeurIPS papers are being rejected based on "ethics reviews". How do we guard against ideological biases in such reviews? Since when are scientific conferences in the business of policing the perceived ethics of technical papers?
Sadly, we seem to be having a bit of a problem on this thread with (self-appointed) ethicists who demand that computer scientists learn (their) ethics, while feeling no need to learn anything about computer science before opining about it.
Except that many of us have computer science degree or are primarily computer scientists too. The field was founded by computer scientists concerned about the impact of their research on society. Do a little reading perhaps, before opining about it?
If you don’t understand a field, that’s fine, but as a researcher you should be open to new ideas and challenges to yours. Listen and learn something along the way, perhaps.

You do realize that ethics isn't restricted to ethicists right? Anybody can (and should) think about it and the ethical consequences of their actions. Computer scientists don't live in some ethics-free lala land where all their actions are devoid of consequence.
Painfully obtuse. We both know there's nothing exceptional about CS regarding responsibility. The starting post argues so strongly for CS being an exception to ethical research that it is less surprising its author continues to naïvely, futilely hint CS is a special case.
