The purpose of a program committee is to save readers time by filtering out papers that are not worth their time, not to filter them out based on ideology. I welcome the first and reject the second, and I hope you do as well.

Huh? Please read up on developments regarding the Menlo Report (2012), and ACM Code of Ethics (2018). APA journals, and Nature ask for “public significance” / “Ethics considerations” statements for all their papers, not unlike the broader impacts statements.

EMNLP & several ACM confs have had to deal with this on an ad hoc basis. Natalie Schluter who was involved in the process at ACL will be on our panel Saturday! Just because you may not have been asked to reflect on ethics before Neurips, doesn't mean its not common practice.
