I’m just saying TK must have had existential reasons to believe he had to compete on this enormously expensive endeavour. Clearly it was a bad choice in hindsight.
Presumably, but I'm puzzled as to why licensing wouldn't be a win for both Uber and Waymo.

Similar calculus to building its own Maps product— don’t want a core component of business beholden to a dominant player’s pricing whims. Also, unrelated, but it was early in the DL hype cycle and I think everyone thought self driving was close at hand.
