I was an SAC for a paper that received ethics reviews. Only a handful of papers of papers received these. The ones I saw were reasonable and made good points. Meta reviews shared feedback from the ethics reviews. 1/https://twitter.com/pmddomingos/status/1336187141366317056 …

Doesn’t matter. Ethical reviewers will at times make errors of judgment. This does not mean that the reviewer was ethically wrong (being wrong about ethics is not the same thing as being ethically wrong), nor the process unfair.

Is that really as strong a distinction though? The call seemed pretty reasonable. https://nips.cc/Conferences/2020/CallForPapers … Writing impact statements really isn't the end of the world and fairness of these ethics reviews themselves will be a matter of discussion over time.

E.g. we still see nonsense like criminality prediction papers using facial recognition every now and then, those simply aren't just wrong on a technical or experimental design level. With clear guidelines and transparent review processes that doesn't seem bad in principle.
