I think so, if it transforms protein modeling. Hard to tell from a press release and blog post, but I'm very excited by the news reports!
In which case, wouldn’t AlphaFold deserve credit for its essential contribution, just like FoldIt contributors would?

No, but AlphaFold's designers and data providers would! I think the issues are the same as with moral responsibility. AlphaFold is not a moral agent, so it is not responsible for its actions, including its scientific discoveries.

So FoldIt contributors get credit, but AlphaFold doesn’t, for doing the same thing. Sounds like human chauvinism to me.
