What if the computer-vision system works entirely differently from human vision?
Any computer vision system that works, no matter how artificial, is ipso facto a better model of human vision than any we currently have.

The pixels may register "dog" but the algorithm still has no concept of what a dog "is." Sensory without context is just sensory, no matter how refined. (PS - your book was one of the first that I chased down the AI rabbit hole!)

This style of argument was crushed in the 1980s because no causal or explanatory insight could be drawn from “expert system” (I.e., high performance) programs. Remember the Declarative vs Procedural controversy? end/

I drive a 5 year old Tesla. The so-called "autopilot" is great in middle lane on freeway but on inside lane almost always veers in a freaky way toward off ramps. The AI lacks context, I see the road ahead and know to go straight but it doesn't. Intention is key.
