There's probably a good story about how Louverture succeeded militarily, but given the poor government in Haiti ever since, it's difficult to see how Haiti could have been worse off w/ a different founding father.

The story is complex and had Toussaint continued to run it, things would have gone much differently. He was double crossed by Napoleon Bonaparte and Jean-Jaques Dessalines took over with a very different philosophy . . . then it went the way it went.
