I doubt these dynamics are limited to politics. They likely impact all kinds of stated preferences, from religion to fast food. In-N-Out Burger zealotry is a bit over the top.

There’s a whopping qualification needed in the middle of this essay. Perception is key- an actual and a perceived 10% are different things. The latter can and has been bought, and with it came calamity.
