Basically it comes down to different opinions on how to transliterate the Hebrew חֲנֻכָּה into English, since English doesn’t have the same sounds as Hebrew. So, none of those spellings are wrong! (But the most popular today are Hanukkah and Chanukah.)

Happy Hanukkah! Or Happy Chanukah? Or is it Hannukah? Channukkah?? Hanuka?! People use all these spellings (and eleven more besides!) to spell the holiday, but… why? Why are there so many different ways to spell the holiday?

Not sure what to eat for dinner? This family had a great idea: they’ve been eating their way through the alphabet, ordering a different cuisine every other week (like Afgan, Balkan, Columbian, etc). Any ideas for Q, X, Y, and Z cuisines in the District?

But English isn’t the only month-name-game in town. Here are some particularly appropriate names for December that we think capture the month much better: Korean: 십이월 (sibiwol), “12th month” (more accurate, at least!) Finnish: joulukuu, “Yule month”

Nope. Turns out “December” just comes from the Latin “decem,” or “ten” -- from back when it was the 10th month of the old Roman calendar.

Somehow, it’s already December! The month conjures up all sorts of things: holidays, winter (or summer if you’re in the southern hemisphere!), reflecting on another year gone by… seems like its name should match all the meaning we attach to it, right?
