In 2013, we set out to disrupt the status quo of sexuality education in 🇲🇬. ⏭️ With intentional scaling, driven by community demand… ❇️ We’ve reached 100,000+ young adolescents & are integrating evidence-based, gender-transformative #CSE into Madagascar’s education system.

We reach tens of thousands of youth a year with high-dosage, evidence-based CSE. “This form of sex ed in schools is a great move because it holistically builds the foundation of future generations and helps youth have a bright future.” - Public school teacher, Amoron’i Mania

PJL's Educators teach to classrooms of 40, 60, 80 students—typical classroom sizes in rural Madagascar. Nonetheless, they also understand that trusted, individual relationships are foundational to effective comprehensive sexuality education. #YouthLed #CSE

We produce a “Constituent Voice” magazine called EKO to foster two-way knowledge exchange with tens of thousands of youth, parents, teachers, school principals, and community leaders in rural Madagascar. Each magazine has a special place for feedback. (1/2)

This is why it is essential for any CSE initiative to promote parents' capabilities, opportunities, and motivation to discuss sexuality topics with their children. #CSE4genderequality

According to research from @UNESCO, youth see #parents as the most trusted source of #sexuality information, but they get most of their information from friends, online, and school. #CSE4genderequality #YTHLiveGlobal2022 @YTHorg @ETRorg @UNFPA

"If we go to a health center, the community immediately thinks we are pregnant." The *availability* of support services ≠ *access.* #CSE gives youth knowledge & guidance, which needs to be part of an ecosystem of comprehensive, integrated services.

“Usually, during this time of the school year, there are already 20 or 30 students that have dropped out. But this time around, this first trimester, there has been a major decrease in the number of students who have left.” –School principal at new PJL partner school Imito (2021)

So much 💛 for our team who worked tirelessly preparing supplies for dozens of our #CSE Educators over the past few days. Chalk, sanitary pads, magazines, dominoes, curricula… We’re ready. 💪 See ya soon, first day of school!

PJL Educators are sometimes the only trusted people that adolescents turn to for help and support. This past school year, students requested 7,750 confidential counseling sessions. Young people need more than skills & knowledge alone—they need supportive communities.

We’ve seen low-quality, one-time, one-directional, & top-down interventions create animosity towards #CSE... ... but we’ve also seen that truly comprehensive, community-engaged, sustained #sexualityeducation deeply resonates with families and schools. Design & delivery matter.

DYK that we don’t screen our CSE Educator candidates based on CVs or cover letters? Qualitative characteristics—such as enthusiasm and attitudes towards gender equality & SRHR—are far more important than formal job experience or writing skills. Learn more: bit.ly/3crbN9w

Effective comprehensive sexuality education provides more than skills and knowledge alone. It’s a transformative intervention that builds adolescents’ self-confidence, self-efficacy, sense of responsibility, and ambition.
