As I told , the debt ceiling is like the appendix of the American economy -- many experts have a hard time seeing why it exists, but if left untreated can blow up and lead to devastating consequences

House Republicans are using their new majority and the threat of the debt default to leverage the Biden Administration and Democrats to make deep spending cuts. For more on this, we talked with @JStein_WaPo, White House econ reporter for @washingtonpost bit.ly/3J0hidl

Wow. Thoroughly researched and documented article on how the Durham investigation is not only a big nothing-burger, but Durham and Barr conspired to re-characterize Durham’s lack of criminal findings to make it seem like there were, WHILE IGNORING THOSE THAT APPEARED ABOUT TRUMP.

The economy is growing. Unemployment is at record lows. 11 million jobs were created in the past 2 yearsβ€”including 750k manufacturing jobs. Inflation is coming down. Wages are up. Let’s build on this progress to further reduce costs and create jobs for Virginians and Americans.

Jaw dropping reporting. Lots here including an explanation of why Durham's colleague resigned: under pressure from Barr to release an "interim" report damaging Clinton & the FBI as the election drew near, Durham had a draft prepared that wasn't factual.

I'm so glad to see Zeynep's piece today. I've followed the targeted harassment against Markle since 2018. All along I've maintained people need to take this more seriously. It's the nexus of online harassment, media, disinformation, culture wars, pop culture, and government.

Gift link to my NYT piece on why the Harry/Meghan stuff is not mere celebrity kerfuffle and what the *actual* news there. Maybe this is why Spare sold so well, despite the dismissive media coverage that largely skipped over the actual matter at hand. nytimes.com/2023/01/25/opi

Part 1: Lay out the simple argument that Republicans are recklessly inviting an economic meltdown even by talking about a possible default. Part 2: Force House Republicans to put forward a plan on the table and watch as they struggle with the fallout.

A remarkable thing is about to happen. With Biden's climate and chips bills set to pump huge sums into green and tech manufacturing, two new reports find much of this will be noncollege work in Trump country. This wrecks some of MAGA's ugliest mythologies:

Wow. The last person in the world that I thought would write about the Royals is . But she’s done us all a great service, connecting the dots in a way that ultimately proves Harry and Meghan have a point.

I couldn't care less about royal news. But don't dismiss Harry/Meghan brouhaha as mere celebrity tittle-tattle. Want to discuss Brexit? This is related. And they make a good case. It's not fluff. I wrote it up, straight, without the celebrity stuff. nytimes.com/2023/01/25/opi

I understand why parents want to know every detail of their children's lives. But as kids grow up, they should be allowed to grow more independent -- and that means having some privacy as teenagers, including the ability to come out as gay, bi, or trans at their own pace.
