How do cancers develop rampant chromosomal instability? We show that Mre11 mediates a p53-independent genome integrity pathway that is dysfunctional in approximately 10% of triple negative breast cancers.

The bipolar nature of grant writing. Each cycle lasts ~24 hours: 1. Holy crap this grant is amazing! I’m going to cure cancer!! Pure happiness. 2. This is quite possibly the worst grant ever written. I’m going to have to work at Starbucks. ... and repeat

Female scientist: 6 yrs post-doc, 8 first author pubs, "I am not good enough to get a job." Younger male scientist: 1 yr post-doc, 0 recent pubs, "I am so ready to start by own lab." The confidence gene is not on the Y chromosome. Women, believe in yourselves!

There is nothing better than watching videos of HeLa cells divide after radiation treatment with the one and only Bert van der Kogel. Seriously. That = pure Pippa happiness

Most medical advances have come from study by men of male cells, animals & anatomy. In 2014, NIH finally acknowledged male bias in preclinical trials & in 2016 tied research funding to inclusion of female animals. Much catch up research is needed for women.

HPV causes over 600,000 cancers worldwide per year. Thankful there’s a vaccine but there’s still much work to do to cure patients. This group is on it! Excellent session at and Fiona Ruiz.

Halloween for most people = an excuse to look hot. Halloween for scientists = an excuse to be extra nerdy. Mad1 and Mad2 (mitotic arrest deficient) proteins Dr. Seuss style. @sarah__emerson
