Corollary to the earlier question— Those of you who grew up poor/food insecure, or experience it now: What’s the one thing you have to have in your pantry to feel *safe*? For me, it’s eggs. Whole weeks of my childhood, eggs were the only protein we had.
This totally non-scientific data set tells me that a whole lot of us default to peanut butter, bisquick, bread, eggs, cheese, powdered milk, beans, and rice. Looking at that list, I know for a fact I could feed my family for a whole pay period on those ingredients, no repeats.
Y’all, my mom put a jar of canned beets in MY pantry. She lives in a whole different state. I do not eat beets in ANY condition, because they smell like dirt but don’t even have the manners you just *be* dirt. Which means my mom is leaving her poverty-anxiety food in MY house.

I want to hug you, friend. As a deep Southerner, my love for Cream of Wheat has never been respected. I don’t even care. It’s better than grits. You can load it down with spices, you can let it get thick and cut it/fry it and eat it like French toast. it’s what’s good.

You know I *crave* that store brand rice-a-roni 10 for a dollar.
Venison. My uncle hunted/hunts, and my chest-freezer was my lifeline. One Christmas the outlet my freezer was plugged into died, and I lost everything. Nearly had a panic breakdown. Uncle refilled my freezer. Best family support ever!
This is why hunting is important! There’s a chapter of local trophy deer/hog hunters here who keep some of the downtown shelters stocked in stew meat. It’s good all the way around!
