New from me at on the bad news bears JCPA bill that only a hedge fund could love. It's dead, but it has Michael Myers qualities: "The bill intended to protect local news would ... [pay] people creating the problem the JCPA’s backers want to solve."

With respect, the day pass is in no way a new invention. @thetimes had them in 2010: niemanlab.org/2010/09/this-w @ocregister in 2013: niemanlab.org/2013/04/the-ne McClatchy papers had them for a while: twitter.com/Lindy_Lu_Lu/st People just don't buy them in meaningful numbers.

I've written here a ton about the why micropayments will never a be a thing for news. A $1.49 day pass is different, and a very smart approach because there is zero change of existing subscribers trading down. An annual digital sub costs $195. 365 day passes: $544. This is smart.

Finally, a newspaper figures out that out-of-town readers are willing to pay a buck or two to read a story! It's unbelievable that it took 20+ years of online journalism to figure this out. Kudos to the @wvgazettemail.

And the… non-apology explanation. It didn’t meet the Post’s standards. Here’s everything that’s wrong with journalism in a single tweet, part two. Well done.

I deleted an earlier tweet about campus journalism at the University of Virginia because it didn't meet Washington Post social media standards. Its tone was inappropriate and snide, so it doesn't deserve to remain here.

What they are not telling you: along with those pictures will come an incessant barrage of subscription requests, “opt out” newsletters and just about anything else the Star can offer to get a sub. I understand it the urgency, but wow. This is bad on so many levels.

In an effort to connect with the community, the @KCStar will be sending out their “world-class photographers” to take your free holiday portraits. This is a new low for visual journalists working for news organizations. kansascity.com/news/business/

I'm thrilled about all the progress being made in local news but the fact that the caption of the first image of this story is still framing this as a competition within journalism means that far too many folks are still missing the point.

Opinion: A surprising good-news story offers hope for local media. Powered by foundations and individual donors, promising examples of nonprofit news organizations are showing how to turn the tide on a struggling industry. @SarabethBerman @JournalismProj phlnthrp.com/3tB82Uj
