I write in working books all the time - usually constructively, though I did find a "pointless gibberish" in a margin the other day. "?!" is probably most common. Classics too: one of my copies of Paradise Lost very heavily noted, not always intelligently, in retrospect... https://twitter.com/elle_hunt/status/1219565406702178304 …

And I love annotated books where someone's really battling with the text - I have a set of Judith Shklar lectures where someone's really done a proper, ill-tempered and not entirely fair filleting. Books are for working and thinking with!

Not strictly books but archival: reminded of attending with @huwlemmey a lecture on a British gay communist who had written to Stalin an extraordinary early defence of gay love, its political qualities etc. Stalin's handwritten note? "Idiot. Degenerate. Archive."

George Steiner wrote one that an intellectual is just someone who reads with a pencil in his hand. Only a fool claims to be an intellectual, but that books are just half of a dialogue is right.

Someone died and I bought their entire collection of esoteric texts from a charity shop for 50p each. They are so heavily notated. Here's a note from the inside back cover of Gnosticism by Hoeller "This does not fit for me"pic.twitter.com/eQ3kAIGgAM

That's a lovely and elegant rejection - I love it when people talk back to books.

I once woke up rather groggily on a friend's futon and passed the time waiting for him to get up by perusing the nearest book - a copy of Better Never to Have Been by David Benatar.* On one page I found "BULLSHIT!!!" pencilled in neat, small block capitals in the margin...

Seconds after smiling at this already wonderfully on-brand situation, I heard through the wall my friend gently coughing himself awake, sitting up in bed, and quietly picking out the third movement of Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2 on his electric guitar...
