During the editing of The Theory of Everything, filmmakers struggled with the task of remaking Hawking's synthesised voice.
Hawking, who loved the film, granted special permission to use his own synthesised voice, which is heard in the final edit.

It's actually thanks to original Trek star Leonard Nimoy that Hawking appeared.
Nimoy was presenting a screening about the legendary scientist when he was told by the film's producer that Hawking was a Trek fan.
